Carbondale man sentenced to 30 years in prison for stealing digital camera

Posted: Updated:

Murphysboro, IL (KFVS) - A Carbondale man will spend three decades in prison on charges of stealing a digital camera.

Prosecutors say Abdullah Ali, 49, formerly known as David Travis, stole the camera after breaking into a Carbondale home in May, 2009.

On August 19, a jury found Ali guilty of residential burglary, and on Friday a judge sentenced him to 30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

If three decades seems like a long time behind bars for a burglary, that's because it is. By Illinois law, burglary is a class 2 felony punishable by up to four to 15 years in prison.

However, Assistant Jackson County State's Attorney Casey Bloodwoth says in Ali's case, with so many prior convictions of burglary, home invasion and robbery, Ali was eligible for enhanced sentencing. A judge sentenced Ali as if he'd been found guilty of a class x felony, for which the state's longest prison terms are given.
