Hospitals change visitor policies in the wake of H1N1

MT. VERNON, IL (KFVS) - The H1N1 Virus is spreading across the Heartland, but now two hospitals in Mount Vernon are trying to keep the virus from spreading into their facilities.

Saint Mary's Good Samaritan Hospital and Crossroads Community Hospital are now restricting who can go into patient rooms.

"Instead of open visitation while flu activity is on the rise we're restricting our visitors to no one under the age of eighteen", said Brandi Van Ormer-Media Relations Spokesperson for St. Mary's Good Samaritan. "We're strongly encouraging no more than two visitors per patient room, or per patient."

Van Ormer says the change is only a temporary one, but also a necessary one to try and keep everyone safe. Even those visitors who are 18 years of age or younger.

"We made the decision because children under eighteen are not only strong carriers of the flu, but they're also one of the most at risk categories for H1N1", said Van Ormer.

A spokesperson for Southern Illinois Healthcare tells Heartland News they're also considering a similar change in their visitor policies at their Herrin, Carbondale and Murphysboro hospitals.
