CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Police in Washington, Missouri say they're seeing a decline in sales for a key meth ingredient three months after putting a new law in place that requires a prescription for that drug.
Local investigaters say they hope this becomes a law in the Heartland and ultimately help with the huge meth problem in Missouri.
Sergeant Kevin Glaser with SEMO Drug Task Force says if pseudoephedrine can be controlled, then it would have a tremendous impact of the meth labs in the area.
"People that are using it to make meth have a lot harder time obtaining the drug, that is our ultimate goal," said Glaser.
Captain Gregg Ourth with the Scott County Sheriff's Department agrees. He says with the success of Washington it is something the rest of the state and counties should consider looking at.
In the city of Washington, all five pharmacies were on board and Randy Morse, manager of Target's pharmacy, says he would be on board.
"I feel that it should be prescription only. The guy in Washington, Missouri is my hero," said Morse. "I'm like a policeman trying to find out are these people actually needing this product. If I had a written prescription it's just like for anything else. I could fill that prescription and feel comfortable that these people need this medication."
This push in the Heartland is still in the very beginning stages and Glaser says they will continue to monitor communities that are make this drug prescription only.
