CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The City of Cape Girardeau has issued several "bullet points" in an effort to outline the details of, and changes expected to come along with the city's new automated trash collection system.
The information is as follows, as written by public information coordinator Nicolette Brennan:
-Each Cape Girardeau resident will get one (1) 64 gallon container for trash and one (1) 96 gallon container for recycling.
-The pickup up days will not change as a result of the new service. There will still be one pickup of trash per week and one pickup of recycling per week both on the same day as it is now.
-Glass will still be recycled. Residents will need to bring their glass to the Osage Centre, Fire Station 1 on Sprigg St., Fire Station 2 on Mt. Auburn Rd, Fire Station 3 on N. Sprigg, Fire Station 4 on Kurre Ln. and to the Public Drop-off center located at the Public Works Facility at 2007 Southern Expressway once the new service starts.
-There will be no rate increase associated with the implementation of this new service.
-No employees will lose their jobs as a result of this new service. Existing employees will be moved to positions in other areas of Public Works.
-If a resident wishes to have a smaller container for trash instead of the one the City is providing, a request can be to the Public Works Department and one may be provided. The rate for collecting a smaller container will be the same as for the larger container.
-Additional trash containers can be purchased by the resident upon request to the Public Works Department. There will be an additional fee for this container on the resident's monthly bill.
-Special Wednesday bulk waste pickups will still be available and there will be no changes in this program due to the new service.
Cape Girardeau city leaders decided to buy six new trash trucks during a Monday night meeting. The trucks come equipped with mechanical "arms" that pick up the trash cans and automatically dump the garbage into each truck bin. The new trucks should arrive sometime in early 2010, according to mayor Jay Knudtson.
