Poplar Bluff acquires flood damaged homes

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - The city of Poplar Bluff is giving homeowners with flood damaged property a chance to move away from flood risk areas.

The city has purchased more than 40 flood damaged homes in the past six years.

Two homes used to sit across the street from Hogg Creek, but after the creek flooded and caused damage to the homes, the city of Poplar Bluff purchased the homes through their flood buyout program.

With several creeks that flood every year, Parks Director Clark Allen says many homes are at risk.

"Several different residential neighborhoods that lie along that or are adjacent to it," Allen said.  "So that housing can be anywhere along that creek where you might have flooding."

Federal and state government programs pay 75% of the bill and the city is reponsible for 25%.

If the city purchases the remaining 15 properties they're targeting, it will cost the city $250,000, and the city plans to use some of the acquired land to build a five to ten mile trail.

"Some of the areas where flood buyout may take place,we'll use that area for trail access," Allen said.

One of the current projects is to link Henderson and Bacon Parks.

Allen says he hopes to eventually connect the trail to the Pike Creek Greenway.

The city also says they expect flood buyouts to decrease because now there are less homes at risk of flooding.
