CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The shooting continues to bring out strong emotions from people all over the country, including in the Heartland. Today, Heartland News spoke with veterans at the VFW in Cape Girardeau. They say they can't believe someone would open fire on an army post.

"I was drafted in '42," said Veteran Melvin Kuehle. He knows what like to live the life of a soldier.

"We ended up in Yokohama," says Kuehle.

Keuhle served in World War II, traveling as far as Australia.

"I think the best Christmas gift I ever had was in December. We came back and landed at San Pedro, California," said Kuehle.

Of all the places he's been and things he's seen, a man opening fire at soldiers on his own soil is something Kuehle can't understand.

"How do you get around with a bunch of pistols in your pocket?" Kuehle asked. "It was a different world when I was there."

The alleged shooter was about to be sent overseas. Investigators think that's why he opened fire. However, Kuehle says that's simply inexcusable.

"Security looked awful lax down there... The base I was at, it was pretty good security. To even get in the base you had to have credentials," he said.

Kuehle also passes along his condolences to the families involved.

"To be killed, especially by an officer, they're gonna feel like they've been let down," he says.

Kuehle says while this shooting was a tragedy, he hopes the country learns from this incident and improves security at military bases.
