POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - Meth makers in Poplar Bluff are now going to have to look somewhere else to stock up on pseudoephedrine.
Monday night the Poplar Bluff City Council approved an ordinance that makes pseudoephedrine available only by prescription.
The ordinance passed by a vote of six to one after heated debate.
Several community members, including pharmacists, doctors and law enforcement officers brought their concerns to the board.
Many folks were worried that it would take too long to get a prescription and the ordinance would create too much of a hassle if they have the sniffles.
But doctors say there are several alternatives that will treat the same symptoms.
Now, law enforcement officials say they have the strongest tool they've ever had in the fight against meth.
"This will prevent it as it did in Washington, MO," said Police Chief Danny Whiteley. "They had a drop of 94% after they enacted that law, so I firmly believe that will make a difference."
"Will meth continue to be manufactured? Yes. But we're doing what we can in this community to safeguard our children, families, and our police officers," added Mayor Loyd Matthews.
Poplar Bluff is the first city in southeast Missouri to pass this measure.
