KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Phil Hughes pitched into the seventh inning yesterday to help the Twins top the Kansas City Royals 8-3 to avoid a three-game sweep. Hughes allowed an RBI single to Omar Infante in the fifth and a two-run homer to Alcides Escobar in the seventh while winning for the first time in 17 appearances. He had lost eight games since that victory on July 2nd.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Denard Span hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning as the Washington Nationals rallied past the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 yesterday. Bryce Harper started in left field and went 1 for 4 with his first stolen base of the season. The two-time All-Star was pulled from the game a day earlier for what manager Matt Williams called a "lack of hustle."

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) - Oklahoma State used the long ball to rally from an early 2-run deficit and beat Kansas 6-3 a sweep of their weekend series in Stillwater. OSU scored three times in the bottom of the second on a three-run homer by Tim Arakawa and twice more in the fourth on a two-run shot by Dustin Williams on the way to the win yesterday. OSU improves to 29-11 on the season.

CHICAGO (AP) - The Chicago Blackhawks felt the repercussions of Brent Seabrook's hit on David Backes again yesterday. How it affects the rest of their playoff series against the St. Louis Blues remains to be seen. Seabrook was suspended for three games by the NHL for his elbow to Backes' head late in the third period of St. Louis' 4-3 overtime win in Game 2.
