Lyons leads Cardinals past Padres 5-3

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Tyler Lyons pitched seven solid innings in his major league debut on the same day St. Louis lost Jaime Garcia for the season, and the Cardinals beat the San Diego Padres 5-3 on Wednesday night.

Lyons, who was promoted from AAA Memphis after Garcia went on the disabled list, allowed one run and four hits. The 25-year-old left-hander was a ninth-round draft pick in 2010 out of Oklahoma State.

The Cardinals announced before that game that Garcia will have season-ending shoulder surgery this week. The lefty went 5-2 with a 3.58 ERA in nine starts this year, helping St. Louis bolt to the majors' best record at 30-16.

CARDINALS-GARCIA SURGERY

Cards' Garcia expected to miss year after surgery

SAN DIEGO (AP) - St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Jaime Garcia will have surgery on his left shoulder this week and is expected to miss the rest of the season.

The Cardinals announced Wednesday that the left-hander will have surgery to repair tears in his rotator cuff and labrum. Team doctor George Paletta will perform the operation on Friday in St. Louis.

Garcia is 5-2 with a 3.58 ERA in nine starts this year. He was put on the disabled list Sunday after feeling pain that had increased over the course of 3 starts.

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny says it wasn't surprising news to find out Garcia needed surgery. Matheny said Garcia could get his shoulder cleaned up and be healthy for spring training.

ROYALS-ASTROS

Astros win series with 3-1 victory over Royals

HOUSTON (AP) - J.D. Martinez hit a two-run homer, Jordan Lyles pitched six effective innings and the Houston Astros beat the Kansas City Royals 3-1 on Wednesday night.

Lyles (2-1) allowed one run and six hits in his 50th career game. Travis Blackley and Hector Ambriz each got three outs before Jose Veras pitched a perfect ninth for his eighth save one night after the bullpen struggled in a 7-3 loss.

Houston took 2 of 3 from Kansas City for its fourth series win this season.

RAMS-WATKINS SUSPENSION

Rams OL Watkins suspended for opener

ST. LOUIS (AP) - St. Louis Rams offensive lineman Rokevious Watkins has been suspended without pay for the season opener for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

The 338-pound Watkins was a fifth-round pick last year and played in one game his rookie season before going on injured reserve with an ankle injury. He's expected to contend for playing time this season and is eligible to participate in offseason and preseason practices and games.

The Rams announced the suspension Wednesday. They started organized team activities earlier in the week.

CHIEFS-MOVES

Chiefs sign 2 safeties, release 2 defensive backs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - The Kansas City Chiefs have signed free agent safeties Quintin Demps and Malcolm Bronson and released safety Justin Glenn and cornerback James Rogers.

The Chiefs announced the moves before the start of Wednesday's voluntary workout.

Demps played for new Chiefs coach Andy Reid while both were in Philadelphia from 2008-09, and spent the past three seasons with the Texans. The former fourth-round draft pick has 61 tackles, three interceptions and one fumble recovery in 48 career games.

Bronson went undrafted out of McNeese State, where he made 230 tackles in 40 career games.

Glenn was trying to make the Chiefs after playing in 40 games over four seasons for the University of Washington. Rogers played in 46 games over four seasons at Michigan.

UMKC COACHES

UMKC coach Richardson rounds out staff

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Missouri-Kansas City basketball coach Kareem Richardson has completed his first coaching staff by hiring Angres Thorpe as associate head coach and Sean Bledsoe and Jason Sautter as assistant coaches.

Connor Hampton was promoted director of basketball operations, while former 'Roos star Spencer Johnson was hired to be a graduate assistant.

Richardson, 1 of Louisville coach Rick Pitino's top assistants, was hired by UMKC in March to replace the fired Matt Brown. He officially announced his staff on Wednesday.

Thorpe has spent the past two seasons as associate head coach at Toledo. Bledsoe has extensive experience running camps and AAU programs, and Sautter joins the program from Seward County (Kan.) Community College.

CHELSEA-MAN CITY

Chelsea players ready for Mourinho return

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Chelsea players seem pleased Jose Mourinho is headed back for a second stint as manager, even after he failed with Real Madrid.

Midfielder Juan Mata said Wednesday prior to the first of 2 U.S. friendlies against rival Manchester City that the 50-year-old Mourinho has been a winner in several countries. Defender Branislav Ivanovic said it was important to finish strong and "live in the moment," although he added Mourinho was 1 of the best.

The Cardinals anticipate standing room attendance of about 46,000 for Thursday night's match after a 2-day makeover, getting the seal of approval from the Chelsea groundskeeper. The second game is Saturday at Yankee Stadium.

Mourinho left Real Madrid after winning two major titles, the 2011 Copa del Rey and the 2012 league championship, but falling short of taking a European Cup.

Manchester City arrives on game day Thursday set for changes. Roberto Mancini was fired after one season and it has been reported Malaga coach Manuel Pellegrini has been lined up as a replacement.
