Does it Work Beauty Week - Mascara

Posted: Updated:

You might think all mascaras are created equally, but not so fast.  I learned a lot when conducting a special comparison test on the three newest mascaras to hit the market.

Heartland Health Reporter Stephanie Byars agrees and offered to try on the newest products. "I really feel you can't pay too much for a good mascara."

Stephanie reveals her big beauty splurge is mascara. She pays about 15 bucks for MAC's Zoom Lash.  So, we'll compare her fave pick, against the three newest mascaras: Loreal's Double Extend Beauty Tubes, Maybeline's Colossal version, and Lash Blast Luxe by Cover Girl. "It's rubber!" Stephanie says as she pulls out the wand on the Lash Blast Luxe.

This new mascara by Cover Girl is unlike anything we've ever seen. It's bright orange wand isn't a brush. It truly is rubber. Cover Girls boasts the small hint of shimmer brightens your eyes, making them pop. "Do you see shimmer?" Stephanie asks as she applies the mascara.

You have to look pretty hard to see the sparkle, but we immediately *see* the difference this mascara makes on Stephanie's normal lashes. "It definitely volumizes more, I like the fullness of this one," she says.

Let's see how it stacks up against the rest. Stephanie takes her eye make-up off and now applies Maybeline's new Colossal mascara. "It says it has collagen in it," she notes.

So, that should pump things up. Colossal also promises "9 times the volume in just one coat!" "That's one coat! I've never put on one coat in my life, and I have to say one coat doesn't do it for me!" she laughs.

Me neither. There's no difference at all.  The Mac mascara looks better than the Colossal. "I wasn't a big fan of that one," says Stephanie.

She's quick to wipe this one off and now apply the third-newest product. L'oreal says its new Double Extend Beauty Tubes are like "fake lashes in a bottle." "Wow, weird. Boy, it is lengthening. I can tell already," says Stephanie as she applies the Beauty Tubes.

The first step is a so-called nourishing application, that basically looks like "White-out" on Stephanie's lashes! Then, you immediately whip out the wand on the other end, and apply the black mascara. "It lengthens for sure, and it looks natural."

We agree if you want *natural* looking longer lashes, this $10 dollar tube might do the trick, but it's not the thickest of mascaras. So, will Stephanie toss her Mac mascara for any of these? "If I was going to make the switch, it'd be the L'oreal Double Extend. However, I'd use it with the Mac for more coverage." Oh, she likes that label.

To sum up,  the $7 Lash Blast Luxe certainly lived up to its promise of fuller-looking lashes, sweeping an 'A minus.

Maybeline's $5 Colossal brush didn't impress us much when compared to these. It gets a colossal 'C'.

L'oreal's $10 Double Extend Beauty Tubes fare the best. Stephanie says the tubes really do come off with eye makeup remover. She gives them an excellent grade A on this mascara comparison Does it Work test.  I bought all the mascaras at Wal-Mart.
