CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Buddy Check 12 serves as a reminder during Breast Cancer Awareness month for women to do self breast exams.  The internet can be a very useful tool in the fight against breast cancer in a couple of different ways.

Southeast Missouri Hospital has an online breast cancer risk assessment test anyone can take to find out their risk for the disease.  It's a quick test.  All you have to do is log on, register for free, answer several questions about things like your age, diet and family history, then get your results.  You can take the test at the Wellness Connection in West Park Mall or in the privacy of your own home.

"It's important to know what your risk is," says Southeast Hospital's Director of Wellness, Cindy Seyer. "It's always important to make sure you have these series of screenings done regularly.  If you're worried based on your assessment; if it shows you're at a high risk of cancer, that's something you might want to talk to your physician about, " says Seyer.

The internet can also be a useful tool, with a little help from your friends!  KFVS 12 has teamed up with Southeast Missouri Hospital for the BuddyCheck 12 program.  The program helps remind women to so their monthly self breast exams.

"We want people to remember the 12th of the month as the day we've chosen to remind people it's important to do their monthly breast self exams," says Seyer.  "It's important to have a buddy.  If there's somebody you can count on to call you that day to perform that self exam, we want those folks to remind each other," Seyer adds. "Two heads are better then one."
