SIKESTON, MO (KFVS) - Is there finally a way to tone your abs without doing sit-ups?  A way that actually works? Makers of the Trim Hoop say, "yes."

Two southeast Missouri women agree.

"I've lost 75 pounds since 2002," said Beth Borton of New Madrid. "I've lost one pant size already," said Terry Eakins.

Some impressive results for sisters Beth Borton and Terry Eakins. Each lady lost that weight due to continuous exercise and watching what they eat.

"I actually lost two inches in a couple of months," said Beth.

"I started late July-first of august, and it wasn't but a few weeks before people said you're losing weight," said Terry.

Both women say the tool that helped them obtain that success was a simple hula hoop. However, this hula hoop isn't like the ones these sisters used as kids. Instead, it's weighted. First, you start out with a 3-pound hoop and gradually move up to six pounds. Makers of the Trim Hoop say using this hoop just a few minutes a day really tighten your core and trim those abs.

Here's a warning, the product makers and my testers say you will be sore at first. You might even bruise a bit.

"When I started hula hooping, I did a minute or two at a time. You get bruised, but you work your way through it."

Now, both women hardly go a day without hula hooping. Beth uses it as a way to cool down after walking on her treadmill.

"After you get over the soreness of the hula hoop, um it's really fun. I can stand here and talk to you while I'm doing it, and it doesn't take your breath away," said Beth.

She says don't get discouraged if it takes a bit to get used to. Remember, Beth and Terry say a combination of cardio, weight training, and dieting helped them reach their weight loss goals. They feel the weighted hula hoop helped them tighten their core and abs. For them, it's easier to do than sit ups or yoga.

"This is definitely an 'A'."

"I lost 12 pounds the first month I cut back."

"It can't just be one thing. You don't go on a diet. You change your lifestyle and that's what I've done."

That's probably the best piece of advice during this special fitness week, and no doubt, the weighted Trim Hoop easily twists and turns to an excellent grade 'A' on this Does it Work test.

By the way, the sisters bought their hoops at Melissa's School of Performing Arts and Fitness in Sikeston.  You can also buy these hoops online.

The gals say the great part is you can sell your old hoop on eBay or Craig's List once you're ready to move up to a higher weight.  Which may also mean you can buy a gently used hoop online.

The hoops costs between $30 - $60.
