Diabetes is a disease that can strike anyone, at any age. But, type 2 diabetes typically only affects people in their 50's and 60's, when their bodies stop making enough insulin. There's a surprising new trend in what's known as adult-onset diabetes. Doctors are finding more and more children with type 2 diabetes.

They say too little exercise and too much food is to blame, and one Heartland expert fears it's becoming an epidemic.Obesity isn't just a problem among adults anymore. Children are also falling victim to fast food and slower lifestyles, and that's leading to more cases of adult or type 2 diabetes in young people.

Janet Stewart, a diabetes educator at Southeast Hospital, says, "In fact in the past year the cases of adult diabetes have doubled and a third of type 2 diabetes cases diagnosed last year were between the ages of 10 to 19." Stewart says kid have more opportunities to entertain themselves, without doing much. "And often times, we tell kids and families to spend less than two hours a day spending the three N's, nintendo, Netscape, and nickelodeon TV, those type of things," she says.

Stewart adds children who are diabetic can have health problems as they reach early adulthood. "The result of that is the complications of diabetes, people may have heart attacks at 30, possibly meaning heart surgery at 35 years old."

Stewart says children and their parents can help prevent diabetes, or make it better by eating less, becoming more active, and doing things together as a family. "Most importantly all children need to know they are loved and cared for, regardless of weight, helping them understand a healthy lifestyle is a responsibility for parents."
