SALINE COUNTY, IL (KFVS) - Saline County Sheriff Keith Brown says he received a fax from former chief deputy Todd Fort that he is retiring effective August 24.

Fort was being held in Jackson County on several charges of sexual assault and official misconduct out of Saline County.  He bonded out of jail on Friday.

Prosecutors say the charges stem from incidents between Fort and a 17-year-old girl who worked at the Saline County Sheriff's Department.

Brown has said Fort worked for the sheriff's department for 21 years.  He has been a chief deputy since December 2006.

The Saline County Sheriff has stripped Todd Fort of his title as chief deputy in July and placed on unpaid administrative leave.

Fort also serves as President of the Harrisburg school board. The board has asked him to resign. So far, Fort has not done that.

In the fax to the sheriff Fort said, "It's my greatest honor and pleasure to serve the people of Saline County during my time as a Saline County Sheriff's deputy."

Brown received the fax at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.  The Saline County Sheriff accepts Fort's retirement.

Brian Drew, Fort's attorney says Fort will submit his resignation from the Harrisburg School Board before their next scheduled meeting on Sept 21.

The Vice-President of the school board Tom Deneal says they will accept Fort's resignation, and move on with the district's other issues.
