February Fitness: Day 2 - Exercise on a busy schedule

CAPE GIRARDEA, MO (KFVS) - We are all busy, whether it be at home, work or both.  Personal trainer, Carlen Mulholland, has two ideas to fit a workout in even when you're short on time.

The first, is a military style worKout and takes about 25 minutes:

Mulholland says run or walk quickly for 10 minutes to get your heart rate up.  After that do 20 pushups.  You can start with push ups in which your knees are on the ground and build up to standard push ups.  Next, run or walk 10 minutes more.  And finally do 20 squats.

Mulholland's other busy schedule workout could be called breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

"Regardless if you're doing 30 minutes or 3 - 10 minute sections throughout the day, that's the same kind of benefit, Mulholland said.  "Mornings are great. If you get an hour for lunch, half of that can be spent going out and going for a walk," she added. 

"After work is another good time to go ahead and start working out because a lot of times we go home, get involved cooking, spending time with kids and events, so if you make that commitment, 30 minutes of my time is going to me," Mulholland said.

Again, that involved breaking your workout into 3 -10 minute increments throughout the day.

As for busy moms and dads, here's an idea for you:

"There have been several times that I have worked out and had a crying, screaming kid, so I pick them up and they're my weight," Mulholland said.  "So, 20-30 pounds of weight is the same as actually carrying hand weights, so children are awesome in that they can be used as weights and a lot of time they want to do the same thing that you're doing too," Mulholland added.
