New trial date set for former Saline Co. deputy

Posted: Updated:
SALINE COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

The trial date has been moved for a former Saline Co. deputy.

According to the States Attorney office in Saline County,  in a motion filed by the defense Friday, the Todd Fort jury trial will not take place on Monday July 13. The trial has been moved to Monday August 29, 2011.

In April, a Saline County judge said the most recent charges against former Saline County Chief Deputy Todd Fort do not violate his right to a speedy trial.

The state filed those charges back in March. In court documents the state alleges Fort had sex with the same victim when she was 16 years old. Fort is also accused of having sex with the victim when she worked at the sheriff's office under his supervision.

In court on Wednesday, April 13, 2011, Fort's Attorney Bryan Drew also argued to reduce Fort's bond. The judge denied that request. He cited Fort's past violation of his bail last fall and the long list of felonies Fort faces.

Meanwhile Drew says his client maintains his innocence and wants his case to go to trial quickly.

"Todd wants his day in court," said Drew.  "He wants to present his side of the case because he feels confident about it. But they really place us in a position where we have to be able to present all our evidence and they're really making that difficult in the manner in which this case proceeding."

Fort was behind bars in the Jackson County Jail on a half million dollar bond.
