If you thought Furby was old news, think again.
If you thought Furby was old news, think again.

Doggy Steps are perfect for helping your dog climb up in your auto. onto your bed...or your sofa, so the makers say.

No more jumping! No more straining!  Joe Terrell of the Raycom News Network has the test this week.

Step one, put this thing together. You can tell by the by the box, there's some assembly. Basically snap everything into place and slide on the washable sheepskin-like cover. No tools needed.

It's made of plastic, but it's supposed to hold up to 70 pounds. That's believable. Because it looks like something that might be made of wood, they include this little label that warns kids, and anyone who can read, that it's made for dogs only.

Humane Society director Gayle Helms has our pooch tester ready to go. She has a "wiener dog" that's kind of a low-rider Bubba.  Our sofa doesn't look like much of a challenge, but for Bubba, it's Mt. Everest.

"Bubba's a real typical Dachshund, low-rider, back problems, older and he cannot get up on the sofa by himself," said Helms.

First, with lots of assistance, Bubba learns what this new toy is for.  For the next minute and a half our vocabulary was reduced to 4 words: "c'mon, Bubba, good and boy."

one can of dog food later, we have a dog on the sofa.

Ah... but does it work in reverse? Whoever said 'what goes up must come down' never met Bubba!

Come on... that last step is the killer. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks??

"We had to coax him and work with him., but I think he's got it now."

This is sounding like a "does it work?" yes.

Gayle says she's built steps for this reason before, but never so easily or economically.

"Oh my gosh, because I made them at home out of wood and we're talking a big expense and a lot of time involved. so, I couldn't believe how quickly you assembled them."

And for Gayle, the slip off washable cover is a big plus that homemade models likely don't match.

So, does it work? Dog gone it. What a great idea. We give the doggy steps a "yes".
