OLIVE BRANCH, IL (KFVS) -

Shirley and James Dunn can only get to their home by boat, even though water continues to recede in Olive Branch.

Shirley says mostly senior citizens live in her neighborhood and says they were all working for 24 to 36 hours straight sandbagging and fighting to save their homes.  Mother nature won that fight, and She explains what is was like when she had to leave her home.

"When you see you're going to lose it and you have no time to get your furniture out you start trying to put up the things that you can't replace," said Shirley Dunn.  "I lifted boxes so heavy that no human being should have to lift, especially a sixty two year old Great Grandma, but I lifted boxes to get them up on tables to hold the tables down so that I could save my pictures because we were too far into it.  That's pretty emotional because I can't replace that."

Shirley says for days she sandbagged and pumped water out of her home.  She says just when she thought more help had arrived she ended up losing it all.

"The governor came in and he came in with the National Guard," said Shirley.  "He assigned the Guard to our neighborhood because it was mainly senior citizens. After the pictures were taken the governor flew off in his helicopter and the Guards were ordered to line up and leave our area because they were going somewhere else. All of our volunteers helped us to go help other people and when our volunteers left us we lost our homes that night."

Shirley says the volunteers left, and then the Guard left, but says she was never told to leave.  Shirley says even though her house is destroyed, she plans to stay in Olive Branch.

She's only been here a year but thinks all the great people are reason enough to keep this area as home.
