OLIVE BRANCH, IL (KFVS) -

Flood victims in one southern Illinois community got some good news about help heading their way.

In Olive Branch, the flood waters are receding slowly. Now, people there are cleaning up the mess left behind.

On Saturday, two state lawmakers stopped by to announce that the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) is soon going to be sending around assessment teams.

118th District State Representative Brandon Phelps says he wants the community to be prepared for the assessments.

"We want to get ready before IEMA sends those teams down," said Phelps. "We don't want them to say, well this is what  we think it's worth."

The local assessment crews will begin gathering information from residents in Alexander County this week.

The IEMA teams are scheduled to be in southern Illinois by the end of the week to begin their work.

As of Friday, 20% of the homes on the west side of Olive Branch were accessible after floodwater ravaged the town.

"We're having to tear out all the sheet rock and insulation," said Bryce Bigham. "We're going to have to redo it all, or else we'll just have to completely rebuild. It's not easy but we have to."

The homeowners were able to get into their homes on the Mississippi River side of Route 3.

The Horseshoe Lake side of town and the area east of Route 3 on the Ohio River side was still under water.

But, news that there is help on it's way is welcomed by people who call Olive Branch home.

"We're going to hang in there," said Ellen Bigham.

"This neighborhood, this county we stick together. We're going to do whatever we can to help everybody."

Ameren was also in the area attempting to restore power.
