Fishing is hugely popular across the Heartland---no doubt about it. So, when a local fisherman told me about the Baracuta filet knife from Havalon, I took it to the experts at the Missouri Department of Conservation.

"When I first saw it I was kind of surprised. Most filet knives are solid in one piece. This is a folding knife, so I've never used that before."

Michael Fiehler teaches fly-fishing classes at the Conservation Department. He's looking for these things in the Baracuta filet knife: a thin blade, five inches in length, a flexible tip and a strong blade, of course.

"Appears to have all of those characteristics."

So, does it make the cut?

He has no problem slicing up the largemouth bass. The big advantage to this knife is the switchable blade, the makers say. No need to bring a tool with you to sharpen your regular knife when the blade dulls. With the light-weight Baracuta, you just snap a new blade into place and never leave your "honey hole."

"Just snap into place. So, that'd be very handy in the field."

However, you're going to pay for that convenience. Typical filet knives are about $10 to $15. This one's $50 to $60. A dozen replacement steel blades costs $15.

"For a lot of people, that convenience is worth the price. It'd make a nice gift."

There's a hint for Father's day! Meantime, Michael says this is a good product, hook line and sinker.

"B+."

That price tag keeps it from a razor-sharp grade 'A' but we think you can filet quickly, nicely and easily with the Havalon Baracuta Edge knife.
