JEFFERSON CITY, MO (KFVS) -

Several missing and unidentified people in southeast Missouri are being honored at a ceremony at the state capitol Friday.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, there are almost 50 missing children in Missouri.

The families of the missing will head to Jefferson City for Missing and Unidentified Persons Awareness Day.

One of those missing children is Elizabeth Gill.  Gill was last seen 46 years ago in January of 1965.  She was in the front yard of her home on Lorimer Street in Cape Girardeau.  Her family still continues to search for her all these years later.

Another case is that of Cheryl Ann Scherer of Scott County.  Thirty-two years after the then 19-year-old Scherer disappeared, her mother says she's finally found hope she'll get the closure she's looking for.  Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter says his office gets several leads every year and investigate everyone.

Another missing teenager is Gina Dawn Brooks.  The then 13-year-old Brooks was last seen riding her bike in Fredericktown in August 1989.  The bike was the last trace of her.  One witness reported seeing a speeding station wagon leaving the scene.   Over the past two decades, there have been ups and downs in the investigation, including arrests that didn't lead to convictions.  But the community is still holding out hope.

Other high profile missing person cases include Christina Pitts of Poplar Bluff who went missing sometime between 1998 and 2000.

Teresa Butler of Risco disappeared without a trace from her Risco home on January 25, 2006.

Tony Woodworth vanished in October of 2007 from Mississippi County.

After Friday's ceremony, a special moment of silence will be held in honor of Jacque Waller.  Waller went missing more than two weeks ago.  Waller's family will not attend the ceremony at the capitol, but the event organizers say they wanted to family to know they have their support.

The missing persons ceremony starts at 3 p.m. Friday.  Martha Hamilton, the sister of Elizabeth Gill, will be the keynote speaker.
