(KFVS) - The U.S. Postal Service released of list of 3,700 retail offices across the country that could be shut down to save money due to decreased demand. That number includes more than 50 outlets in our Heartland States.

The U.S. Postal Service announced Tuesday that it will be taking the "next step in right-sizing" its expansive retail network by conducting studies of approximately 3,700 retail offices.

That about one in 10 of its retail offices. The postal offices on the list will be studied to determine customer needs.

This comes as more people are conducting their postal business online, on smart phones or at other shopping destinations.

Local post masters who are part of the offices under review tell Heartland News they will have to fill out a survey every time a customer comes in so that trends can be tabulated.

More than 35 percent of the Postal Service's retail revenue comes from expanded access locations like grocery stores, drug stores, office supply stores, retail chains, self-service kiosks, ATMS and usps.com, according to the USPS.

The Postal Service introduced the Village Post Office as a potential replacement option for the closing of retail offices. Village Post Offices would be operated by local businesses, like pharmacies, grocery stores and other appropriate retailers, and would offer popular postal products and services like stamps and flat-rate packaging.

"The Postal Service of the future will be smaller, leaner and more competitive and it will continue to drive commerce, serve communities and deliver value," Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe said in a press release Tuesday.

Donahoe says working with third-party retailers creates easier, more convenient access to USPS products and services.

Several locations in the Heartland are on the list. People in those towns tell us they rely on their post office and don't want to see it go.

"I don't know what I"ll do," said Pam Davenport who uses the branch in Dutchtown. "It's the easiest one for me to get to. I really don't have time to go somewhere else."

"It's important to these little towns," said Larry Crutchfield. "I understand the money problems, but I hate to see it go."
