CARUTHERSVILLE, MO (KFVS) -
Caruthersville Police Chief Chris Riggs is suspended, and officer Marcus Hopkins is expected to resign, after the Pemiscot County prosecutor charged both men with stealing some $25,000 from the city's Criminal Investigation Fund.
That news comes from Caruthersville City Attorney Lawrence Dorroh Thursday morning, as the two lawmen made their first court appearances.
Riggs is accused of writing checks to Hopkins out of the fund between June 3, 2009 and August 29, 2011, then forging Hopkins' signature to cash the checks.
Hopkins faces 11 counts of forgery, accused of forging an expenditure log each month during nearly the same time period to account for money he did not pay out.
According to a release issued by Dorroh, the city requested a MHP investigation of irregularities in records relating to the city's Criminal Investigation Fund. That investigation led to criminal charges against Riggs and Hopkins.
The Pemiscot County sheriff arrested both men Wednesday.
Both were released on $200,000 bond.
Riggs scheduled to be back in court Oct. 17 with an attorney.
Hopkins had an attorney present Thursday and his preliminary hearing set for Nov. 14.
The Missouri Highway Patrol Drug and Crime Division conducted the investigation.
