The Foot Buddy
By: Amy Jacquin

January in the Heartland means it takes an extra effort to stay warm, even at work! Lots of people use space heaters under their desks. But something called the Foot Buddy may be all you need.

"KFVS 12 and UPN The Beat," Shirley Slaughter answers hundreds of calls every day for Heartland News. She works in a room with tile floors and lots of windows... So this space heater is frequently used. But Shirley's agreed to help us try the $30 Foot Buddy.

"The on/off switch is easy to reach with your foot, and so is the low/high switch," Amy Jacquin explains the product to Shirley. "Right now it's set on low. It's supposed to be very quiet."

Shirley slips her feet inside the pockets, and turns the Foot Buddy on. After just a few seconds, she feels some heat.

"I can feel a little warm..."

But it never gets toasty warm. So she switches the heat to "high" and continues to work. The Foot Buddy requires you to take your shoes off, and keep both feet flat.

"That doesn't bother me at all, that's fine," she says. "With my feet in there, I feel comfortable."

Comfortable maybe... But how about warm?

"I don't feel any more warmth than I did with it on the low setting," Shirley added.

"Is it enough warmth to keep your feet warm right now?" Amy asks. "No!" Shirley answers. The heat I'm getting is not enough I would keep my shoes off."

Next we head to our Creative Services department. Their corner office is always cold, and Jamie Eftink readily agrees to try the Foot Buddy, but says her little space heater leaves big shoes to fill! Jamie feels some warmth, but not really "heat." And she notices another draw-back when comparing it to a space heater.

"My hands are always freezing," Jamie asks. "My hands are always colder than me feet. So I think I like the space heater better, because it seems like the heat blasts out and reaches your whole body."

So Jamie isn't sold on the $30 Foot Buddy.

"I really can't tell any difference," she says. "My feet were probably warmer with my shoes on."

Diane Johnson gives it one final test. She decides pretty quickly she doesn't like keeping both feet flat.

"That's not very comfortable because I do like to cross my legs usually, when at my desk," Diane says.

Diane started with the Foot Buddy on "high." However, her "high" hopes quickly fell flat.

"It's not really warm, and the top of my feet are cold!" laughs Diane.

So all three women are disappointed in the Foot Buddy... It barely gets warm, and it tops out at a D.
