LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The 'Sodastream' soda and sparkling water maker promises to be "the smarter way to do soda" by turning regular tap water into fresh sparkling water or your favorite soft drink, the healthy and eco friendly way. But does it really work?

I brought the 'Sodastream' to our nibble nook at the station (our little lunch area). The first thing you need to know is that the starter kit is going cost you about $120, but it does come with several flavors, ten to be exact, plus another pack of 12 sample trial size bottles. Additional flavors are sold separately.

Setup is pretty simple. First, attach the carbonation canister that's included in every kit. Then fill the two plastic bottles that come with the kit with ordinary tap water. The bottles then screw into the main 'Sodastream' machine. With a few pumps of the tap...sparkling water! If you want to make soda, just pour a cup full of flavoring into the water and give a gentle shake. Once done I had to perform a taste test. I was surprised to find that the soda isn't bad. I thought it tasted along the lines of Kroger's 'Big K' cola!

I then invited some co workers to try out our homemade soda to see what they think. My first tester was 'Sunrise' anchor Jean West.

"Well, it's not bad it's got a little bit of an after taste though.

When I asked Jean what name brand cola she thought it tasted like, she responded with "Pepsi".

Several others tested the cola too, and they all came up with the same conclusion. It tastes like 'Pepsi'.

So after the taste tests are all done it seems like everybody we checked with liked the product, most of them all, except me, said they thought it tasted like the name brand 'Pepsi'.

For each one of the larger bottles of soda flavoring, you'll make about three two liters of soda. In the end, I think the 'Sodastream' sparkling water and soda maker does what it promises. It all just boils down to how much you wan to spend for soda you make at home compared to driving to the grocery for soda that's already made.
