Colp, Illinois -

COLP, IL (KFVS) - The timetable for thousands of postal facilities to be shut down, and thousands of workers laid off is being pushed back.

On Tuesday afternoon the U.S. Postal service announced a five-month moratorium on it's plans to shut down3,700 rural post offices and 252 mail processing facilities.

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) said the move gives Congress time to come up with postal reform legislation.

"Today, the Postal Service has given Congress five months to act. It's now up to us to move forward with comprehensive legislation that does not jeopardize the best postal service in the world," said Senator Durbin. "I will continue working with Senator Kirk and the rest of the Illinois delegation to protect good-paying jobs in our state."

The decision was also welcomed by many of the postal workers who were facing losing their jobs.

"I'm very excited about that decision hopefully we can find another way out of this financial crisis," said Colp's Postmaster Vanessa Sherrill. "By increasing our revenue here in Colp. And also just provide better service for our customers."

And for now those customers will still be able to pick up their mail and mail a letter without leaving their town.

"It's very important that the post office is here because it's very convenient. There's no public transit here," said Mary Ann Duncan. "And the closest facility is in Carterville."

"It's very necessary. We don't have a store here. We don't have anything this little post office is the only thing we have,"said Freida O'Daniel. "So we need it and we need it bad."

The workers at the Carbondale postal distribution center will be holding a public meeting on Thursday at the SIU Student Center. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
