Christmas characters stolen from Candy Cane Lane

WEST FRANKFORT, IL (KFVS) -

They light up the night throughout the holidays on Candy Cane Lane in West Frankfort, but police are now on the search for more than a dozen characters stolen from the popular display.

The magic of the holiday season comes to life each year on Candy Cane Lane, but recently the eyes of a child noticed a real life Grinch had paid a visit.

"This girl reached out the window and said where's Sponge Bob and her mom said he's probably taken down after Christmas, I said no I didn't," Candy Cane Lane creator Tim Murphy said. "I said they're gone."

Gone are several Sponge Bob, Toy Story characters and others, said Murphy. Some 600 characters light up Candy Cane Lane, many made by students in Murphy's art class at West Frankfort High School.

"(It's) nothing about the money, it's about the students that did them," Murphy said. "They'll never get the chance maybe to see those characters again."

Neighbor Jerry Dare has several characters on his front lawn. He says it's terrible someone stole from the free holiday landmark.

"The kids come by and they look at it and it is where dreams from true for little kids," Dare said.

Murphy and others are now hoping for a real life dream, the return of the characters stolen from Candy Cane Lane.

"It's not going to stop Candy Cane Lane," Murphy said. "We'll just continue and we'll just remake the characters unfortunately but hopefully they'll return, that's what we want."

Murphy says some years ago Snoopy and Charlie Brown were kidnapped and later returned. He adds in some 26 years of putting on this display, they've never had this many characters stolen.

Meanwhile, police continue to investigate the crime. If you know anything about the characters taken from Candy Cane Lane call the West Frankfort Police Department.
