Jackson County Board moves forward on care center

Posted: Updated:

MURPHYSBORO, IL (KFVS) - The dilemma about what to do with the Jackson County Rehab and Care Center is moving one step forward.

Monday night the county board members listened to what each other had to say about the two proposals in front of them on the care center.

The proposal from RFMS Inc. would pay out the county $45,000 a month for two years, as the company builds a new facility in Carbondale. Then they would eventually move all of the residents and staff at the center to the new facility.

It's a move that some of the residents say they're not too happy about.

"I don't like it. I don't want to move," said Barbara Shields. "This is a good building, and a good place. We have new windows, new everything. And it's home."

But, Jackson County leaders say they can no longer afford to keep the center up and running. They've already borrowed more than $1 million from the Solid Waste Authority.  The State of Illinois is still too far behind in reimbursement payments to help the county with expenses.

The other proposal that is in front of the county board members comes from RDK Management Inc., the company is offering the county $750,000 for the building and ten acres of land. The building actually sits on 23 acres.

But, the company's Executive Director Scott Stout, told county board members they weren't interested in the added land, because they are not in the real estate business.

What the company would do though is keep everyone currently at the care center right where they are in Murphysboro.

That's something that some of the people who have loved ones at the care center, agrees with.

"I would like to see it stay here. And let all the clients stay here," said Ina Young. "They've been here so long. And they're close to us. They just need to be here."

County leaders did decide to set Feb. 15, as the final day for any other companies to make an offer on the building.  Then they plan to make their final decision about which offer to accept 60 days after the first of February.
