Crews worked on the Eggners Ferry Bridge Monday to get it ready for a contractor to build a new span.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet crews performed maintenance work before the arrival of Hall Contracting out of Louisville. The work includes railing replacement and repairs, as well as deck patching to the remaining spans of the bridge.

The company was awarded a $7 million contract to build a new span to replace a 322-foot section knocked out by a cargo vessel back in January.

State officials say they hope to work ahead so there won't be lane restrictions on the bridge once it reopens to traffic.

Once the new span has been built, highway crews will install lighting and allow AT&T to replace a fiber-optic communication cable, which was severed in the crash. That additional work will require lane restrictions.

The bridge is scheduled to open by Memorial Day.
