2 nominees for 12th District seat to debate

CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) - Two candidates seeking to succeed Congressman Jerry Costello will debate each other next month in southern Illinois.

The Belleville News-Democrat (http://bit.ly/J3Pz3G ) reports that Democrat Brad Harriman and Republican Jason Plummer will take part in the debate June 15 at WSIU-TV in Carbondale.

They're seeking the 12th Congressional District seat being vacated by Costello. He's a Belleville Democrat who announced last year that he wouldn't seek another term this November.

Only two men - both Democrats - have represented the 12th District since World War II. The district runs from St. Louis' Illinois suburbs to the state's southernmost tip.

The debate's sponsors include the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, as well as WSIU, The (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan and the News-Democrat.
