Gizmo Grater By: Amy Jacquin
Black and Decker has a line of Gizmo products. We test the $25 Gizmo Grater. The cordless gadget promises to shred and shave at the push of a button.
"
In order for it to work cordless, I was supposed to have charged it for 15 hours overnight, and I did not get that done," Amy Jacquin chastises herself. "So we're using electricity." Directions show how to change the blades."Place the grater unit on a table or counter," Amy reads. "Fit the rounded rod top of the flip-top blade holder into the long slot at the top of the grater unit..."Huh? Actually it sounds much more complicated than it is."Oh there!" sighs Amy as the attachment opens. "That was easy. I just didn't use enough force at first."
The gizmo grater is supposed to grate hard cheese, like sharp cheddar, semi-soft cheese, like farmer's cheese, as well as chocolate and a variety of other things. Those are the items we test. Amy has the fine grater blade on, so she starts with the sharp cheddar.
Directions say to hold the food against the blade, but not to press against it... Pressing bogs down the motor and wears down the battery. As Amy uses the Gizmo Grater, fine crinkles of cheddar fall onto the plate. She changes to the medium-coarse blade, to see how that works on the farmer's cheese."It gives you a nice grip for your hands," Amy comments as she holds the grater. "Either button turns it on or off. So that's nice."
Once again, the Gizmo Grater shreds the cheese. It's easier than doing it manually, but it's also slower. We change the blade for one more test."This part is just a little awkward," she says as the pulls the grater lid apart. "It takes some strength to open that. Then everything flies out of there."
We attach the shaving blade, to try the chocolate. The Gizmo turns this chore into a real treat. Overall, the Gizmo Grater is pretty "great." But like any grating blade, it's no fun to clean. And changing the blades takes some getting used to. So we give the $25 Gizmo Grater an A-.
