MARSHALL-TRIGG COUNTY LINE, KY (KFVS) -

Engineers say Eggners Ferry Bridge repairs are on track for reopening of the bridge in time for the Memorial Day weekend.

According to a transportation cabinet spokesman, contractors continued curb finishing work along the replacement span deck Thursday and installed guardrail along the new driving surface.

Contractors also worked to remove some of the wooden forms used to pour the decking and curbs.

Testing of concrete samples exceed state strength specifications, according to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. KYTC crews also continued placing conduit on the bridge.

An inspection of the bridge is expected sometime Thursday.

"We continue to be optimistic the remaining finish work will be completed ahead of schedule," said Jim LeFevre, KYTC District 1 Chief Engineer.  "However, at this point, it is difficult to predict a specific day and time for restoring traffic.  We will continue to monitor progress on all fronts and will make an announcement as soon as possible."

The bridge serves as the western entrance to the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, a key route for summer tourist travel.

The bridge has been closed since a cargo ship tore down a 322-foot span on January 26.
