NEW MADRID COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

An inmate at the New Madrid County Jail has died after being assaulted by other inmates.

Deputies say John Wayne Reynolds Jr., 50, of Lilbourn died in an ambulance which was taking him to a hospital. The assault happened around 8 p.m. Tuesday.

New Madrid County Coroner Jimmy McSpadden says preliminary autopsy results reveal Reynolds died from blood loss from a lacerated spleen due to blunt force trauma.

Reynolds' family says he was being held in jail on a parole violation.

"This should never have happened," said Reynolds' mother, Jan Morgan. "They murdered my son. I will go to any lengths I have to go to get justice. He had to be screaming for his life, and no one came."

Morgan says her son had told her he had been assaulted inside the jail before. She believes he was beaten over a cigarette.

"They beat my son to death!" said Morgan. "I finally realized that the last time he told me he loved me that would really be the last time. He can't tell me anymore. He has two sons. This should not have happened."

"I feel like nobody was watching then," said brother, Bobby Reynolds. "He had never been in a fight in his life. There should have been somebody keeping an eye on him. My brother isn't here anymore to stand up for himself so we will stand up for him. We will fight for justice for him."

The New Madrid County Sheriff's Office, Missouri Highway Patrol, and New Madrid County Coroner are handling the investigation.

Sheriff Terry Stevens told Heartland News late Wednesday, charges should be filed in connection with the death Thursday morning.

Stevens says they do everything they can to make sure inmates are safe. He says in a jail, you are often dealing with violent individuals. He says they have about 43 inmates right now. Stevens says they are not over crowded, or under staffed.

Meanwhile, Stevens also tells us he no only expects to file charges in connection with this death, but also a separate assault involving other inmates. That assault that injured a different man happened Monday night.

Richards Funeral Home in New Madrid says visitation for John Wayne Reynolds, Jr. will be on Sat. June 9, from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

The funeral will be on Sunday June 10, at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
