NEW MADRID COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

Five people are facing murder charges after an alleged jail cell beating earlier this week.

According to court documents, Joshua J. Darter, Maurice Ely, Pedro S. Rivera, Henry L. Hill and Trevor J. Hatton were all charged with second degree murder.

According to the probable cause statement, John Wayne Reynolds was reportedly assaulted by several inmates on Tuesday while he was being held in the New Madrid County Jail.

Officers say they interviewed all 15 inmates in the jail. Witnesses told officers that Reynolds was in the day room of a cell when he was approached by the five inmates charged.

The probable cause statement says that inmates accused Reynolds of being a police informant because his name was on a jail cell wall saying he was a "snitch."

Officers report that Trevor Hatton walked up behind Reynolds and put a blanket over his head. That's when the others reportedly started to punch the victim. Reynolds then reportedly walked into his cell and told the suspects that he did not deserve it.  The other inmates in the cell told officers that Reynolds had a large bruise on his forehead and he was on the edge of the bunk wobbling. That's when it's reported that he fell to the floor and became unresponsive.

Reynolds was taken to a Sikeston hospital and pronounced dead on arrival.

An autopsy was performed on June 6.  It revealed that Reynolds died from a lacerated spleen caused by blunt force trauma.

Bond was set at $1 million for the five inmates charged.

All are set to be arraigned on June 28.

Ely of Mesquite, Texas was charged with murder 2nd degree, possession of marijuana, and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute in connection to a Missouri State Trooper shooting in March.
