Here are some startling new numbers from the American Diabetes Association: There's a 23 percent rise in type-one diabetes in the US over the past eight years.
To raise awareness, dozens of families and friends walked around the SIU campus lake on Sunday.
They walked in memory of those who lost their battle with the diabetes, or who are currently living with the disease.
It's part of the JDRFs fundraising for the research and cure of diabetes.
It's something the Evans family of Murphysboro is just now learning to handle.
"A year and a half ago our son was diagnosed with type one diabetes," said Scott Evans of Murphysboro. "So that made it very personal for us. A lot of people think you can't have sugar that's the jest of it. But it's a lot more than that. There's a lot more to it blood testing, and insulin control, keeping your blood sugars in a good range. It's a lifelong twenty four seven activity."
Currently there's an estimated 18.8 million Americans diagnosed with both types of diabetes.
And another 17 million unaware they have the disease.
Diabetes costs the US $116 billion a year in medical bills.
A wide-ranging farm bill the House is considering would cut food stamps by $2 billion a year and make it more difficult for some people to qualify for the domestic food aid program.
