Marion city leaders hope for money from new gaming regulations

Posted: Updated:
MARION, IL (KFVS) -

City leaders in Marion hope new gambling regulations will help them make a little extra money.

As part of a plan to help the state's budget deficit, lawmakers voted on the Video Gaming Act.

The act makes it legal for establishments with a liquor license to have up to five video poker machines that pay jackpots.

Just last week, Marion's city council passed an ordinance to provide local enforcement of the new statute.

But the idea is getting mixed reviews from some residents.

The business with the machine would get 65 percent of the profit and the city and state would split the rest.

The new machines could be in place in towns across Illinois this fall.
