DU QUOIN, IL (KFVS) -

His son was killed fighting a fire. Now, a Heartland father is fighting a battle of his own to keep that from happening to the sons of others.

It was June 17, 2011 when firefighters answered the call to a building fire in Pinckneyville.

Corey Shaw, 22, served with the Du Quoin Fire Department. He died when a wall collapsed on him.

Almost a year later, Corey's father, Bob Shaw is on a mission.  Shaw is also the Du Quoin fire chief.

He's dedicating himself to better train firefighters so they can avoid the loss of life.

"I am on a mission now, I am," Shaw said. "I don't want his death to be in vain and I don't want other people to go through what we have gone through. So I want people to do everything that they can do to eliminate deaths that are preventable."

Shaw says he wants all firefighters, volunteer included, to take special training. He hopes to get donations to pay for it. He has a goal of getting state funding perhaps after the classes are filled.
