CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -
Southern Illinois' largest employer is preparing for the possibility of layoffs.
A letter from Brett Patton, SIU's director of labor and employee relations sent a certified letter to the president of the SIUC Non-Tenure Track Faculty Association this week alerting the union of the possibility of a layoff.
The letter sights significant cuts to state funding and a possible decline in enrollment as the cause.
But the layoff is by no means certain. The letter only went to union leaders, not the employees themselves.
"If there is a layoff, those specific notices would go out next month. That's if there would be layoffs," said SIU Spokesman Rod Sievers. "It's just a warning, a heads-up that this is a possibility."
Illinois Education Association spokesman Jim Clark tells Heartland News the letter is no cause for concern.
By contract, the university is required to notify the union of a possible layoff 60 days prior to a new academic term.
