JACKSON, MO (KFVS) -
A man was sentenced to five years behind bars after he pleaded guilty to endangering the welfare of a child.
Jeromy L. McClanahand, 20, was arrested in April after an infant was found with a broken collar bone.
McClanahand withdrew his not guilty plea and pleaded guilty, according to the Cape Girardeau County courthouse. He waived his sentencing assessment and was sentenced to five years.
According to the probable cause statement, the mother of the baby told police she heard the baby crying loudly while she was in the shower and McClanahand told her the child woke up cranky.
The baby continued crying for several days until she took it to the hospital where doctor's found the injury probably happened within the past week and was caused by blunt for trauma or squeezing.
According to court documents, when McClanahand learned the hospital was calling the Children's Division, he abruptly left the hospital.
The baby's mother told police McClanahand told her not to tell anyone from the Children's Division that he had been in the home because he was afraid he would get in trouble. She also told police she was not initially forthcoming because she said McClanahand had been violent toward her in the past.
The mother told police McClanahand told her the dog could have jumped on the child causing injury or to blame it on another male who previously stayed at the home, according to court documents.
McClanahand is awaiting trial in Madison County on felony charges of domestic assault 1st, child abuse, endangering the welfare of a child. In that case, McClanahand is accused of severely beating an infant causing a broken jaw and other injuries.
