CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) - A new law signed on Wednesday by Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn will help protect children and young people sexual abuse while on college campuses.

The governor signed House Bill 3887 after it received a unanimous vote in both chambers of the General Assembly.

The new law mandates that all university staff and athletic coaches to report abuse.

On the SIU campus in Carbondale their sexual abuse policies go even farther then the new law mandates.

"What we do is that we make sure that all faulty staff and students, and those entering the campus such as vendors are protected," said Linda McCabe Smith, Ph.D. Associate Chancellor for Institutional Diversity at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.

"And we follow the guidelines if the law and that is title nine. Which mandated that we provide sexual assault and sexual harassment training for all individuals on campus."

The legislation was introduced in order to hopefully prevent a sex abuse scandal similar to the one on the Penn State Campus. Where just last week a jury found Penn State's former defensive football coordinator Jerry Sandusky, guilty of sexually abusing young boys.

"Unfortunately we have to have laws to bring things forward. And that's what we have in place right now," said Doctor Smith. "But at SIU we do have a morale obligation. We take it very seriously to protect those who are on campus and those who are coming to the campus."

Illinois State Representative Dwight Kay (R-Glen Carbon) and Illinois State Senator Kyle McCarter (R-Lebanon) co-sponsored the legislative measure.
