HERRIN, IL (KFVS) -

Traffic in Heartland emergency rooms is really picking up due to the heat.

Once the mercury soared above 100 degrees the Emergency Department at Herrin Hospital was sure to stock up on intravenous fluids for a busy weekend of heat-related illnesses.

Doctors warn heat exhaustion and heat stroke can be dangerous or even deadly.

According to doctors the elderly and the very young are more at risk than healthy adults.

"You need to watch out for little kids because typically, they're out there playing and don't take care of themselves," said Dr. Eric Ruebke of Herrin Hospital. "You need to make sure your little kids are drinking lots of fluids, eating, and staying in the shade or indoors as much as possible."

Doctors say if you start feeling fatigued, weak, or nauseous take those signs seriously, and take a break from the heat.

Don't forget to drink lots of water or sports drinks with electrolytes to stay hydrated. Doctors say you should avoid drinking alcohol, caffeinated drinks and energy drinks. All of those beverages can cause you to become dehydrated.
