A field fire kept firemen busy for most of the evening Friday.

The Saline County Sheriff's Office got a report of a large field fire at 4:35 p.m. Friday on Duncan Road, five miles southwest of Carrier Mills.

Nearly 100 acres of field and brush were burned very quickly Friday afternoon, on former Will Scarlet Mine property.  Crews say the uneven terrain and thick grass and brush caused the fire to burn quick and caused firefighters a few challenges.

At least five firefighters were treated at the scene for heat exhaustion and one of them was taken to Harrisburg Medical Center for heat exhaustion. EMS crews from Med-Force EMS, Saline County EMS and Johnson County EMS stood by to treat the firemen

Firemen were still on scene late into the evening putting hot spots, the fire was under control by 6 p.m. Firefighters from Carrier Mills, Stonefort, Harrisburg, New Burnside, Williamson County Fire Protection and U.S. Forest Service responded to the fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Crews say a possible cigarette may have started the blaze.
