CHRISTOPHER, IL (KFVS) -

The storms that pushed through Sunday afternoon pulled a portion of the roof off of Christopher's elementary school.

The superintendent says it happened about 5 p.m.

Strong winds lifted about 2200 square feet of the roof off of the side of the school that houses grades first through third.

Ten classrooms were flooded. The water brought down the ceiling tiles in four of the rooms.

There were about 16 inches of water in some parts of the school.

School leaders say they are glad it happened during summer break.

"I want to say that we're very lucky in that this storm did hit on July the 1st and not September 1st," said Richard Towers, school superintendent. "Students were not here. We were very fortunate that students weren't present at the time of the storm."

Crews spent Monday afternoon putting a replacement roof in place.

The superintendent says everything should be fixed by the time the new school year begins.
