HARRISBURG, IL (KFVS) -
Illinois transportation officials joined state and local dignitaries in a ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the completion of a $14.1 million improvement project on IL 13.
The project includes a four-lane cross section with modern design, turn lanes and signals.
The project, funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, provided more than 110 direct jobs and connects IL 13 to US 45.
"We must continue to invest in key infrastructure projects like the Route 13 connector to further improve safety and traffic flow on our busiest roadways," Governor Pat Quinn said. "This critical project creates jobs, boasts economic development and paves the way for the growth of the trucking industry and local businesses."
The improvement project completes the IL 13 connector in Harrisburg by routing the highway just north of downtown Harrisburg.
The segment will improve traffic flow, capacity and accessibility for transport in and out of the area, and will ease congestion for the trucking industry and residents by redirecting large commercial vehicles away from downtown Harrisburg.
"This is prime development on both sides of our highway and we're going to continue to work with IDOT," said Harrisburg Mayor Eric Greg. "Hopefully, the possibility of getting some access roads off of that in the near future would be huge for us. But the development is there and it's going to happen. I'm excited about it and it's just a great opportunity for our town."
The prime contractor, George Jones of Marion, anticipates the project's full completion by mid-August, weather permitting.

One person has died in a crash near Harrisonville, MO, Thursday evening. The crash happened on Missouri Highway 7 and Walker Road. It involved a car and a tractor-trailer. Harrisonville is in Cass County.
Savannah Nash celebrated her 16th birthday last week. She died Thursday when her car slammed into a semi while she was texting during her first time driving by herself.
