MT. VERNON, IL (KFVS) -
A 51-year-old Mt. Vernon woman died in a fire at her home early Monday morning.
Carol M. Rainey died in a fire that broke out at 404 Perkins Avenue around midnight, according to Jefferson County Coroner Eddie Joe Marks.
No foul play is suspected.
Marks says Rainey's son received a bad cut to his arm when he tried to break a window to get to his mother. He was taken to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. Rainey's husband says his son got out of surgery about 2 p.m. Monday. He says he's expected to be in the hospital for a few days.
Rainey's husband was treated and released from the hospital for minor burns to his leg.
Marks says Rainey was disabled and had trouble getting out of the home.
No firefighters were hurt battling the fire, but the home is a total loss.
Family members say two dogs also died in the fire.
The State Fire Marshal, Jefferson County Coroner and Mt. Vernon Police Department are investigating.
The family is working to set up a fund to help pay for funeral expenses.
