Sentences handed down for gambling corruption pleas

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Today, two co-conspirators and one former state lawmaker related to the gambling corruption probe were back in the courtroom in front of Judge Myron Thompson not as witnesses, but as admitted criminals awaiting their sentence.

Terry Spicer was sentenced to 57 months, or four years and nine months in prison. Following incarceration he will also serve two years of supervised release. As part of his plea deal Spicer will also have to pay a $40,000 forfeiture.

Ronnie Gilley was sentenced to 80 months, or six years and eight months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release. As part of his plea deal Gilley agreed to pay a $200,000 forfeiture.

Jarrod Massey was sentenced to 65 months in federal prison, which breaks down to five years and five months. Massey will have to serve three years supervised release following the completion of his sentence and pay a fine of $20,000.

Federal Prosecutor Kendall Day said during court proceedings that both Ronnie Gilley and Jarrod Massey will get credit on their sentences for time served.

Country Crossing Developer Ronnie Gilley, former Lobbyist Jarrod Massey and former State Representative Terry Spicer all pleaded guilty to corruption charges prior to the last gambling corruption trial.

Both Massey and Gilley faced possible maximum sentences of 27 years in federal prison for their admitted roles in a conspiracy to buy votes to pass gambling legislation through the Alabama legislature. Federal prosecutors recommended ten years and 11 months in federal prison for Gilley and 11 years and two months for Massey. Both recommendations are serious downward departures from federal sentencing guidelines - earned by their cooperation during the prior gambling corruption trials.

Prosecutors recommended a sentence of three to five years with a maximum 40 months for former Rep. Terry Spicer. Spicer pleaded guilty last year to bribery charges in a separate, but related corruption case.

All three men have waived their right to an appeal and must report to prison on or by 2 p.m. on August 27, 2012.
