BUTLER COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

It's happening more and more - bed bugs crawling their way to the Heartland. Sandra Scott lives in the Hillcrest apartment complex in Poplar Bluff.

"I didn't know what I even had," Scott said. "I went to the hospital because I was all broke out in hives."

Scott said she had a severe case of bed bugs.

"Me and my neighbors we go down for coffee and somebody mentioned something about bed bugs," Scott said. "Someone asked, have you ever checked that because they were advertising it on TV?"

The black spots on her bed are from the bed bugs. The insect continues to show up in more reports, according to Kenneth King, the Executive Director of the Butler County Housing Authority.

"You go out to yard sales and different places you get free stuff, they might not be bed bug free," King said.

Another problem especially at complexes like Scott's is bed bugs spread from unit to unit.

"So they went around and checked all the apartments and yeah there was more than one that had them," Scott said.

Those findings meant the entire building needed to be sprayed multiple times and everyone's belongings had to be cleaned.

"Well I tell you what I don't want to go through that again," Scott said. "I had blotches all over my face and it was just horrible."
