NEW MADRID COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -
A Portageville man has found the remains of an old wooden boat on the Mississippi River. But, where it came from remains a mystery.
Perry Pikey found the boat around mid-June in the Mississippi River about 15 miles south of New Madrid on the Missouri side.
The boat, which may have been a commercial vessel, is around 40-50 foot long. Much of the boat is pinned together with wooden pins, some nails and stainless steel. It looks like the boat originally had all wooden pins and was updated with stainless steel. There are also very old bricks on board that may be hand cut.
The boat may have been updated to either steam or diesel. There is evidence of a fire on the boat.
It also has the remains of old refrigeration units, a support for a sail and an old battery on board.
Pikey was wondering if the boat could have been washed to shore by a flood.
