CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

We have excessive heat warnings in place again across the Heartland. The bad news is if you can't afford to pay your power bill many agencies are now tapped out of resources to help.

"If you're fortunate enough to have a good air conditioning unit then consider yourself blessed," said Lacy Washer of Cape Girardeau.

With mother nature showing no mercy, people are doing what they can to say cool.

"We just gave out our last fan yesterday", said Tina Rodgers-Case Manager, Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army started its Fans for Friends program early this year. They gave out more than 300 fans to people in need.

"It got hot so much earlier than ever before," said Rodgers.

Sammy Phillips was lucky enough to get one of those fans.

"I'm still trying to get an air conditioner," said Phillips.

He has gone other places for help too.

"They don't have anything, no help for us," said Phillips.

The East Missouri Action Agency just ran out of funds on Tuesday. The agency helps people pay their power bills. Due to budget cuts, they started out the year with fewer resources.

"I was over there yesterday and they are out of funds," said Washer. "They put us on a waiting list."

It is leaving people wondering where to turn.

"It's hard to imagine people living without air or a fan," said Rodgers.

"People out here need help, lot of families need help," said Phillips.

The Salvation Army hopes to get funding in soon to help people with power bills.

Meantime, the organization is happy to take donations of fans and air conditioning units.
