MARTIN, TN (KFVS) -

Crews began demolishing a 350-foot communications tower on the University of Tennessee at Martin campus on Thursday.

The tower had been a campus landmark for more than 40 years. It's near the intersection of Moody and Hurt streets across from the university's steam plant.

The university constructed a new communications tower in 2011.

Final power of lights was disconnected and upper sections of the tower were removed Thursday. Lower sections of the tower are scheduled to be deconstructed Friday morning.

The new communications tower offers upgraded features included updated tower lighting, backup emergency power and security. It also ensures that public safety communications equipment, the student run WUTM-FM and WLJT-DT stay on the air during emergency situations or power outages.
